Сoncept of creativity – among mysteries and history

Abstract: The article provides an attempt to follow the development of the concept of creativity in the history of philosophy and the history of culture as a whole. It also explores the role of religion and science in the development of this concept.

The creativity is usually defined as a process of creation of something new (very often it is added that it must be «new in quality»). But it would be just an attempt to see the new without its connection to the old and declare it the main feature of the creativity.

In our opinion, it is impossible to form the concept of creativity by enumerating the features of the process of creation. In this way, it is only possible to describe the process, but it will not help to understand creativity. The formation of the concept of creativity is possible only through its genetic definitions that have been developed in the framework of so-called «activity approach».

The author investigates the subject from the point of view of dialectical and historical materialism. However, he criticizes the position of naturalistic materialism on the matter. Moreover, the author highlights the positive impact of idealistic dialectical tradition on solution of the problem in the framework of philosophy. Also, he emphasizes the importance of political economy for practical solution. The author points out that the only adequate form of creativity is a collective creation of history. It has always been this way. However, providing social orders that are based on division of labour, creation of personality and history happened rather defying conscious actions of people, than as a result of them. Thus, creativity was understood as a supernatural or extra-natural ability.

Now, it's time to secularize and demystify the creativity. It has to be returned to its real source — to the social activity of people. However, it's impossible unless we bring the understanding of nature of creativity up to the level of the philosophical concept. Only this can become a reliable basis for creation of the real program of making creativity a usual way of person's life in society.
